Η Νίκη της Σαμοθράκης
Η Νίκη της Σαμοθράκης (The Winged Victory of Samothrace) is a magnificent marble sculpture from the Hellenistic Era, created by an unknown artist. It was discovered in the Sanctuary of the Great Gods on the island of Samothrace and represents the Goddess Nike, symbol of victory.
Since its discovery, Greece has repeatedly sought the return of the statue—just as it has with the Parthenon Marbles still held by the British Museum—but without success. The sculpture has been displayed at the Louvre Museum in Paris since 1884.
During Ottoman rule, Greek antiquities were often used as tools of foreign policy. In 1863, while Samothrace remained under Ottoman control, Sultan Abdul Aziz allowed the French and later the Austrians to transport significant artifacts from the island to their countries.
We continue to hope that Η Νίκη της Σαμοθράκης will one day return home to Greece.
