The Tsarouchi — Τσαρούχι
The Tsarouchi is a traditional Greek shoe, best recognized today as part of the ceremonial uniform worn by the Evzones, the elite Presidential Guard of Greece.
Following Greece’s liberation from Ottoman rule, the Tsarouchi took on profound symbolic meaning. The characteristic pompom represents the Tree of Liberty — a symbol of freedom and resilience. Hidden within the shoe’s tip was a concealed blade, camouflaged by the pompom, which could be used in close combat. This powerful detail came to embody the spirit of defending liberty — both literally and symbolically.
