This is an Orthodox icon of the Theotokos and Christ Child, rendered in the classical Byzantine style. The Mother of God is shown in a half-length pose, gently inclining her head toward her Son in an expression of tender compassion. She wears her customary maphorion (veil) in deep red tones, adorned with the three stars that symbolize her perpetual virginity—before, during, and after the birth of Christ.
The Christ Child rests against her cheek, reaching up toward His mother in a gesture of love and divine intimacy. He is clothed in golden garments, symbolizing His divinity and kingship. Both figures have finely detailed halos, with Christ’s halo containing the traditional cross markings.
The background is gold, a hallmark of Orthodox iconography, representing the uncreated light of God. Surrounding the figures are Greek abbreviations traditionally found in icons:
-
ΜΡ ΘΥ (Μήτηρ Θεοῦ) – “Mother of God”
-
ΙC XC – “Jesus Christ”
