Katyatid Καρυάτις
A katyatid (Καρυάτις) is a sculpted female figure that serves as an architectural support, taking the place of a column or pillar. The Greek term karyatides literally means “maidens of Karyai,” referring to an ancient town on the Peloponnese. Karyai was home to a temple dedicated to Artemis Karyatis, the goddess who rejoiced in the dances of the maidens. These Karyatides—the dancing women of Karyai—were said to carry baskets of live reeds upon their heads, as if they themselves were living, graceful extensions of nature.
